Three different jobs
Avatar tools put a synthetic presenter on screen reading your script — useful for training and localisation, uncanny for brand storytelling. Text-to-video generates footage from a prompt, which is astonishing in demos and inconsistent in production. Clipping tools take long footage you already have and cut it into short-form, which is the least glamorous and by far the most reliably useful.
The four questions that decide it
- What are you making? Repurposing a webinar is a clipping problem. A talking-head explainer is an avatar problem. They are not the same purchase.
- How is it billed? Almost everything here meters generation minutes or credits, and rendering is expensive — a month of experimentation burns an allowance fast.
- What are the licensing terms? Commercial use, avatar likeness rights, and stock music clearances vary sharply. Read them before a client campaign, not after.
- Where is the watermark? Free and entry tiers frequently brand your output, which rules them out for anything customer-facing.
A realistic expectation
Generative video is not yet a replacement for a camera or an editor for narrative work. It is genuinely good at repetitive, templated, high-volume output: product updates, localised training, social cutdowns. Buy it for that.
