Figma is the industry standard for a reason, and its free tier makes it the default choice even for occasional use.
Where it wins. Real-time collaboration is the foundation and still the best implementation anywhere — comments, cursors, and shared editing that simply work. Components, variants, and variables make a genuine design system possible rather than aspirational. Developer handoff via inspect and code generation removes most specification arguments. Auto Layout handles responsive behaviour properly, the plugin ecosystem is enormous, and FigJam covers whiteboarding in the same subscription.
Where it falls short. It is a design tool, not a publishing tool — you still need Webflow, Framer, or a developer to ship. The learning curve for Auto Layout and constraints is real for non-designers. Very large files slow down noticeably, and offline work is limited. Pricing changed to a seat model that surprised some teams, and full-fidelity print work remains outside its remit.

Everything happens in the browser, several people can work in one file at once, and developers can inspect exactly what was built — which ended the era of emailing design files around.
