The only claim that matters is the audited one
Every VPN says it keeps no logs. The ones worth paying for have had that claim examined by an independent auditor and publish the report. Treat an unaudited no-logs promise as marketing copy, because that is all it is.
The four questions that decide it
- Has the no-logs policy been independently audited, and how recently? An audit from four years ago describes a company that no longer exists in the same form.
- What jurisdiction is it in? Where the company is incorporated determines who can compel it to hand over data.
- What is the real speed cost? Encryption always costs throughput. Modern protocols keep it small; older ones do not.
- What are you actually solving? Public Wi-Fi safety, geo-testing your own content, and avoiding ISP tracking are legitimate. A VPN does not make you anonymous.
Honest limits
A VPN moves trust from your ISP to the VPN provider. It does not stop you being tracked when you are logged into accounts, and it is not a substitute for a password manager or two-factor authentication. Buy it for what it does.
