Buyer’s guide
Retention is the entire product
A community platform succeeds if members come back next week. Everything else — courses, events, gamification — is in service of that, and a platform that makes returning feel like a chore will churn regardless of its feature list.
The four questions that decide it
- What pulls people back? Notifications that respect attention, a mobile app, and activity that is visible without hunting for it. Weak here and the community dies quietly.
- What is the fee structure? Subscription, transaction percentage, or both. On a paid community the percentage is the number that matters.
- Is discussion or content the centre? Some platforms are forums with courses attached; others are course platforms with a feed. Pick the one matching what members actually come for.
- Can you reach members off-platform? If you cannot export email addresses, the platform owns your relationship with your own audience.
A warning worth stating
Community is the most labour-intensive product in the creator economy. No platform reduces the hosting, moderating, and prompting that a healthy community needs.
