Semrush Tutorial for Beginners: Step-by-Step Guide to Using Semrush for Keyword Research [2025]

Published by Semrush on YouTube · loads only when you press play

Our verdict

Semrush is the most complete SEO platform on the market and priced accordingly. If your job involves defending a search position against named competitors, it is the tool that answers the most questions without leaving the tab.

Where it wins. Competitive research is the strongest part of the product: point it at a rival domain and you get their organic keywords, their paid keywords, their ad copy history, their traffic trend, and the keyword gap between you in about four clicks. The keyword database is vast and the Keyword Magic Tool's clustering makes it usable rather than merely large. Site Audit checks well over a hundred technical issues and, more usefully, ranks them by actual impact instead of dumping a flat list. The Content Marketing Toolkit on Guru closes the loop from brief to published draft.

Where it falls short. Price is the obvious barrier — the entry tier is around $140/mo and the tier most people actually need is closer to $250. Limits bite in ways that surprise people: projects, tracked keywords, and reports per day are all metered, and extra users are a paid add-on rather than included seats. Backlink data has improved a great deal but Ahrefs still has the edge on index freshness. The sheer number of tools means a genuine two-week ramp before a new user is efficient.

Our call. The right answer for agencies, in-house SEO teams, and content operations at scale. A solo blogger publishing four posts a month cannot justify it — start with Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and Search Console instead.

Best for

Agencies and in-house teams who need competitive intelligence, technical audits, and content workflow in one platform.

Key takeaways

  • 1The broadest toolset in SEO — roughly 50 tools under one login
  • 2Competitor keyword, ad, and traffic analysis is best in class
  • 3Site Audit prioritises issues by impact instead of listing them flat
  • 4Entry plan is ~$140/mo; the practical plan for most teams is Guru
  • 5Extra seats cost extra — budget per user, not per account
  • 6Backlink index still trails Ahrefs on freshness

Semrush is the widest SEO platform we test, and width is the point. Fifty-odd tools sit behind one login covering organic search, paid search, content, local, and social — which makes it the natural pick for an agency or in-house team that would otherwise be reconciling four subscriptions, and overkill for a blogger who wants to know which keyword to write about next.

What we like

  • Unmatched competitive research depth
  • Enormous keyword database with usable clustering
  • Impact-ranked technical site audits
  • Content Marketing Toolkit closes brief-to-draft
  • Local SEO and listing management built in
  • Position tracking with SERP feature breakdowns

Worth noting

  • Expensive for solo bloggers and small sites
  • Per-seat add-on pricing on top of the plan
  • Metered limits on projects, keywords, and reports
  • Two-week learning curve before real productivity

Powerful but plan on a learning curve

It does everything, which is also the catch. Once it clicks, it is indispensable.

Comprehensive, great training

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush worth the price for a solo blogger?

Usually not. At roughly $140/mo for the entry plan, the cost only makes sense once search traffic is producing meaningful revenue or you are managing multiple sites. Start with Google Search Console plus Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, both free, and upgrade when the free data stops answering your questions.

What is the difference between the Pro, Guru, and Business plans?

Pro covers the core research and audit tools with 5 projects and 500 tracked keywords. Guru adds the Content Marketing Toolkit, historical data back to 2012, and higher limits — this is the plan most teams need. Business adds API access, Share of Voice, and much higher limits for agencies.

Does Semrush include extra user seats?

No. Each plan covers one user, and additional seats are a monthly add-on per user. For a three-person team this materially changes the total, so price the seats alongside the plan rather than after it.

Is Semrush or Ahrefs better?

Different strengths. Ahrefs has the better backlink index and a faster interface. Semrush is far broader — PPC, local, social, and content workflow are all included. Agencies serving varied clients tend to land on Semrush; specialist SEOs tend to prefer Ahrefs.

How accurate is Semrush traffic data?

It is a model, not a measurement. Estimated traffic derives from ranking positions and clickstream data, and it can be off by a wide margin on individual sites — particularly small ones. Use it to compare competitors relative to each other, never as an absolute figure.

Does Semrush offer a free trial?

Yes, Semrush typically offers a 7-day free trial on Pro and Guru, which requires card details and converts automatically. There is also a permanently free account with roughly 10 requests a day — enough to try the interface, not enough to work in.
