ElevenLabs vs Speechify

ElevenLabs produces audio; Speechify consumes text. Despite both being called text-to-speech, they solve opposite problems.

ElevenLabs is the quality benchmark for synthetic voice. Emotional range, natural pauses, and emphasis land where other engines give you a competent monotone, and voice cloning from a short consented sample is startlingly accurate. If the voice is part of what you are publishing — narration, audiobooks, dubbing — this is the choice, and its enforced consent verification on cloning is a genuine mark in its favour.

Speechify is built for listening. Word-level highlighting, playback speeds well beyond what most engines keep intelligible, and reliable OCR on scanned PDFs turn commutes and queues into reading time. As an accessibility tool it is excellent.

Do not cross the streams. Using Speechify for published voiceover means settling for noticeably weaker audio; using ElevenLabs to read your inbox means paying per character for a job Speechify does better. Note also that ElevenLabs bills by characters converted, which makes long-form audiobook work a real budget line.
