Our verdict

beehiiv is the strongest platform for anyone treating a newsletter as a business rather than a mailing list.

Where it wins. Growth tooling is native and it is the reason to choose beehiiv: a built-in referral programme, the Boosts network for paid subscriber acquisition, and cross-recommendations between publications are all first-class, where competitors expect you to bolt them on. Monetisation is equally direct — paid subscriptions with no cut on higher tiers, plus an ad network that places sponsors into small newsletters that could never sell direct. The website builder produces a real site with SEO-worthy archive pages, and analytics report on growth and revenue rather than opens.

Where it falls short. It is a newsletter platform, not a marketing automation tool: sequences and behavioural automation are thin next to ConvertKit, and it is a poor fit for ecommerce or lifecycle marketing. Pricing climbs steeply with subscriber count, and the growth features that justify it sit on higher tiers. The ad network only pays meaningfully once you have real scale, so early expectations need managing.

Our call. The best choice for a newsletter you intend to monetise. The wrong tool for transactional or ecommerce email.

Best for

Independent publishers and newsletter operators building an audience they intend to monetise.

Key takeaways

  • 1Referral programme, Boosts, and recommendations are native growth tooling
  • 2Paid subscriptions with no platform cut on higher tiers
  • 3Ad network places sponsors into newsletters too small to sell direct
  • 4Website builder produces SEO-worthy archive pages
  • 5Automation is thin compared with a real email platform
  • 6Pricing climbs steeply as subscribers grow

beehiiv was built by people who grew a newsletter to millions of readers, and the product reflects what that actually requires: a referral engine, recommendation network, and monetisation built in rather than assembled from three subscriptions. It is a publishing business in a box, and it is opinionated about being one.

Frequently asked questions

Is beehiiv better than Substack for newsletters?

For a newsletter you intend to run as a business, generally yes: no revenue cut on higher tiers, a real website builder, and native growth tooling. Substack brings its own discovery network, which beehiiv answers with Boosts and recommendations.

How do Boosts work?

Other publications recommend your newsletter and you pay per verified subscriber acquired. It is a paid acquisition channel with predictable unit economics, which is unusual in newsletter growth.

Does beehiiv take a cut of paid subscriptions?

Not on the higher tiers — you keep the revenue less payment processing. This is a meaningful difference from platforms that take a percentage indefinitely.

Can beehiiv replace my email marketing platform?

Only if your sending is newsletter-shaped. Automation and behavioural sequences are thin compared with ConvertKit, and it is a poor fit for ecommerce or lifecycle email.
