Our verdict

Pipedrive is the CRM small sales teams actually maintain, because it asks for the least and shows the most.

Where it wins. The activity-based model is the insight: every deal must have a next action, and the interface nags until it does, so the pipeline reflects reality rather than optimism. Setup takes an afternoon, not a consultant. Email sync, call logging, and meeting scheduling capture activity without manual entry. Pricing is transparent and mid-market, and the mobile app is genuinely usable in the field.

Where it falls short. It is a sales tool, not a marketing platform — email campaigns, landing pages, and lead nurturing are add-ons or integrations, where HubSpot includes them. There is no free tier, only a trial. Reporting is adequate rather than analytical, and several useful pieces (Campaigns, LeadBooster, Web Visitors) are paid extras on top of the seat price, which erodes the clean pricing story.

Our call. The best fit for a small team whose job is closing deals. If you need marketing automation in the same tool, HubSpot is the better shape.

Best for

Small sales teams and consultants who want a pipeline they will keep up to date without a CRM administrator.

Key takeaways

  • 1Activity-based model keeps the pipeline honest
  • 2Set up in an afternoon, no consultant needed
  • 3Email, call, and meeting capture without manual entry
  • 4No free tier — trial only
  • 5Marketing features are paid add-ons
  • 6Reporting is adequate rather than analytical

Pipedrive was built by salespeople who were tired of CRMs designed for managers to report from. The whole product is a pipeline you drag deals across, with the next action always visible — which is why teams keep it current when they abandon heavier systems.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does Pipedrive have a free plan?

No, only a trial. It is a paid product from day one, which is a genuine disadvantage against HubSpot's free CRM.

What is activity-based selling?

Every deal must have a scheduled next action, and the interface prompts until it does. It sounds trivial and is the main reason Pipedrive pipelines reflect reality rather than optimism.

Does it do email marketing?

Only via the paid Campaigns add-on. Pipedrive is a sales tool; if you need marketing automation in the same subscription, HubSpot is the better shape.
