Our verdict

Rank Math is the better WordPress SEO plugin for most sites, mainly because its free tier includes what competitors sell.

Where it wins. The free version is remarkably complete: redirect manager, 404 monitor, rich schema types, multiple focus keywords per post, and Search Console data in the dashboard. The setup wizard is the best in the category for beginners, and the content analysis gives specific, actionable checks rather than a vague traffic light. It is lighter than Yoast on page load, and the schema builder handles product, recipe, FAQ, and how-to markup properly.

Where it falls short. The interface is feature-dense and easy to over-configure — the defaults are good and most people should leave them alone. The content-analysis score encourages keyword-stuffing if followed literally. As a younger project it has had occasional update regressions, so it is worth staging major upgrades. And like any SEO plugin, it cannot fix content nobody wants to read.

Our call. The default WordPress SEO plugin for new sites. Yoast remains fine if you already run it — switching costs more than the difference is worth.

Best for

WordPress site owners who want complete on-page SEO control without paying for a premium plugin.

Key takeaways

  • 1Redirects, schema, and Search Console data free
  • 2Best setup wizard for SEO beginners
  • 3Multiple focus keywords per post
  • 4Lighter page-load impact than Yoast
  • 5Feature-dense interface invites over-configuration
  • 6Following the content score literally encourages keyword stuffing

Rank Math won share from Yoast by giving away what its rival charged for. Redirections, schema types, multiple focus keywords, and Search Console integration all sit in the free version, and the setup wizard walks a beginner through configuration without assuming any SEO knowledge.

Frequently asked questions

Rank Math or Yoast?

Rank Math for a new site — its free tier includes redirects, schema, and Search Console data that Yoast charges for. If you already run Yoast and it works, switching is rarely worth the effort.

Does it slow down my site?

Less than most SEO plugins. It is lighter than Yoast in typical measurements, though any plugin adds some overhead — disable modules you do not use in its settings.

Should I chase a 100/100 content score?

No. The score rewards keyword density and rigid structure, and following it literally produces stilted writing. Fix the genuine issues it flags and ignore the rest.
