Shopify
The default platform for selling online
Shopify is the safest choice for selling physical products, and the total bill is always higher than the plan price.
Where it wins. Checkout is the strongest asset — it is measurably better at converting than anything a smaller platform ships, and Shop Pay's saved details accelerate repeat buyers. Inventory, shipping rates, tax, and multi-channel selling into social and marketplaces are handled natively. The app ecosystem means any capability exists, and the theme quality is high. It scales from a first product to serious volume without replatforming.
Where it falls short. Using anything other than Shopify Payments adds a per-transaction fee on top of your processor. Apps stack up fast, and a typical store's real monthly cost is several times the plan. Deep customisation requires Liquid, and content and blogging tools are weak enough that serious content marketing usually lives on a separate site.
Our call. The right default for physical products. Digital-only creators should look at Gumroad; WordPress publishers at WooCommerce.
Best for
Anyone selling physical products who wants a platform that works out of the box and scales without replatforming.
Key takeaways
- 1Best-converting checkout in e-commerce
- 2Native inventory, shipping, tax, and multi-channel selling
- 3App ecosystem fills every functional gap
- 4Extra per-transaction fee unless you use Shopify Payments
- 5Apps make the real monthly cost several times the plan
- 6Blogging and content tools are weak
Shopify is the default because everything works and everything integrates. Checkout conversion is the best in the industry, the app store fills any gap, and you never think about servers or PCI compliance. The cost is a monthly subscription plus apps plus a fee on every sale if you use another payment processor.

Frequently asked questions
What are Shopify's transaction fees?+
Shopify charges an extra percentage on every sale if you use a payment processor other than Shopify Payments. Using Shopify Payments avoids it, which is the point of the policy.
What will Shopify actually cost me?+
Plan, plus payment processing, plus apps. A typical small store runs several apps for reviews, email, and upsells, so the real monthly figure is usually two to three times the plan price.
Shopify or WooCommerce?+
Shopify if you want it to work without maintenance. WooCommerce if you already run WordPress, want no platform fees, and have someone to handle hosting and updates.
