Our verdict

Sprout Social has the best reporting in social media management and prices itself for teams with budgets to match.

Where it wins. Reports are the differentiator: clean, customisable, and genuinely ready to send to a client or an executive without rebuilding in slides, which saves real hours every month. The Smart Inbox handles high volume across networks with assignment and tagging that hold up under load. Listening is included on higher tiers rather than sold separately, approval workflows are proper, and the CRM integrations are mature.

Where it falls short. It is expensive, and priced per user with the useful tiers well above entry — a small team pays more than for Hootsuite or many times Buffer. Some plans limit the number of social profiles, so costs compound for agencies. Listening on lower tiers is limited, and for a solo creator the entire feature set is unusable overhead.

Our call. Justified for mid-market and agency teams that report to stakeholders. Everyone else should buy Buffer or SocialBee and keep the difference.

Best for

Mid-market and agency social teams who must produce client-ready reporting and manage high message volume.

Key takeaways

  • 1Best reporting in the category — genuinely client-ready
  • 2Smart Inbox holds up at high message volume
  • 3Listening included on higher tiers
  • 4Proper approval workflows and CRM integrations
  • 5Per-user pricing with useful features well above entry
  • 6Profile limits compound cost for agencies

Sprout Social sells to teams that have to prove results to someone. Its reporting is genuinely presentation-ready, its inbox handles high message volume without losing threads, and its listening is solid — all of which is why it costs several times what creator-focused tools do.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Sprout so expensive?

Per-seat pricing with the useful tiers well above entry. You are paying for reporting quality and inbox capability aimed at teams that report to clients or executives.

Sprout Social or Hootsuite?

Sprout for reporting and inbox quality; Hootsuite for breadth of networks and listening at a somewhat lower price. Both are priced for organisations rather than creators.
