Our verdict

ExpressVPN is the most refined VPN to actually use, and the hardest to justify on price alone.

Where it wins. The apps are the best in the category — clean, fast to connect, and consistent across every platform including routers and smart TVs, where rivals get clumsy. Lightway is quick to establish and stable on mobile networks that break other protocols. TrustedServer runs everything from RAM with repeated independent audits, and the British Virgin Islands jurisdiction has no data-retention requirement. It reliably works in restrictive networks where others fail.

Where it falls short. It is the most expensive mainstream VPN by a clear margin, and renewal is higher still. Eight simultaneous devices trails competitors. The server count is smaller than NordVPN's, and there are fewer extras — no meaningful antivirus or identity tooling in the base product. Its acquisition by Kape Technologies is a fair consideration for privacy-focused buyers, as it is with CyberGhost.

Our call. Worth it if you value flawless apps and connection reliability above price. Most people get equal privacy for less from NordVPN or Surfshark.

Best for

Users who want the most reliable, easiest-to-use VPN across many device types and will pay a premium for it.

Key takeaways

  • 1Best apps in the category, consistent across every platform
  • 2Lightway connects fast and survives mobile network changes
  • 3RAM-only TrustedServer with repeated independent audits
  • 4Works reliably on restrictive networks
  • 5The most expensive mainstream VPN, and renewal is higher
  • 6Eight devices and fewer extras than rivals

ExpressVPN charges the most and justifies it with polish rather than features. Its apps are the easiest to use in the category, Lightway connects almost instantly, and its RAM-only TrustedServer architecture has been audited repeatedly. Whether that polish is worth double the price is the only real question.

Frequently asked questions

Why is ExpressVPN so expensive?

You are paying for app polish and connection reliability rather than features. Its apps are the best in the category and work consistently on routers and TVs where rivals get clumsy.

Who owns ExpressVPN?

Kape Technologies, which also owns CyberGhost. Kape's earlier history in adware is a fair thing for privacy-focused buyers to weigh.

Is ExpressVPN worth it over NordVPN?

Only if app quality and reliability matter more than price. NordVPN is faster and cheaper with a comparable audit record.
